The story of Volkswagen Golf GTi

Volkswagen was the very first to use thosw three little lettters on a hatchback by attaching "GTi" to the boot-lid of the most sporting Golf hatch,it created not only an enduring icon but a whole new breed of performance car.It was an overnight hit when launched nearly 37 years ago at the Frankfurt motor show;original plans called for a total production run of 5000 cars, but in a short time, over 5000 a month of the first generation car were being built.

The car that started if all.Volkswagen took a standard hatch and installed a fuel injected(that's the i in GTi) 1.6-liter,four cylinder engine delivering 101 lb ft of torque through a four-speed 'box.Anticipating hard use the engine wore an oil-cooler.Outside,the GTi was identifiable trough its chin-spoiler,black wheel arch extensions to accommodate bigger 175/70 tyres and its suspension, lowered by 20mm.Inside,the sporting owner got heavily bolstered seats,a rev-counter,sober matt-black finish and a three-spoke sport steering wheel. And to demonstrate German humour,a gear knob in the shape of a golf ball.
