Volkswagen Golf Mark 2 (1983–1992)

The next generation Golf GTi is longer and wider than the first,and it used the same superb 112bhp engine that the MK1 GTi used in its  last two years of  production figures were 112bhp at 5400 rpm and 114lb ft of torque.In spite of its extra weight,the MK 2 GTi was a brilliant handling car,just as fun to drive as the first,The bonus,though,was extra refinement and a more comfortable ride.By the end of its production run in 1991,the GTi could be specified with a 16 valve 1.8 litter engine producing a potent 139bhp.Like the outgoing model,it could be identified by its black wheel arch extensions and wider wheels.Additionally,the MK2 GTi got distinctive red insert strips on the grille and side mouldings.

Volkswagen was the very first to use thosw three little lettters on a hatchback by attaching "GTi" to the boot-lid of the most sporting Golf hatch,it created not only an enduring icon but a whole new breed of performance car.It was an overnight hit when launched nearly 37 years ago at the Frankfurt motor show;original plans called for a total production run of 5000 cars,but in a short time,over 5000 a month of the first generation car were being built.

The car that started if all.Volkswagen took a standard hatch and installed a fuel injected(that's the i in GTi) 1.6-liter,four cylinder engine delivering 101 lb ft of torque through a four-speed 'box.Anticipating hard use the engine wore an oil-cooler.Outside,the GTi was identifiable trough its chin-spoiler,black wheel arch extensions to accommodate bigger 175/70 tyres and its suspension,lowered by 20mm.Inside,the sporting owner got heavily bolstered seats,a rev-counter,sober matt-black finish and a three-spoke sport steering wheel.And to demonstrate German humour,a gear knob in the shape of a golf ball.
